About IRCTC Cancellation Deadlines
IRCTC has specific deadlines for cancelling and getting refunds for different levels of tickets:
- Regular Tickets: There are different deadlines for full (minus some charges) and partial refunds.
- Tatkal Tickets: ickets must be cancelled at least 24 hours before train departure for any refund
- Premium Tatkal: hese tickets are not refundable. Refunds are available only if the railways cancel the train.
- After chart Preparation: The chart is generally created 4 hours before the train's departure. No refunds are available on any ticket after the chart is created.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the deadline for full and partial refunds?
The deadline for full refunds is 48+ hours before departure (flat fee only). The deadline for partial refunds is 12-48 hours before the train departs (flat fee + 25% of the fare).
Can I cancel after chart preparation?
No, tickets cannot be cancelled after the chart is generated (usually 4 hours before the train departs). Some exceptions apply for waitlisted tickets.
What if my train is running late?
If the train is more than 3 hours late, you can cancel after 3 hours of the scheduled departure for a full refund.
Are the deadlines the same for all ticket classes?
Yes, the deadline is the same but the fee varies depending on the class (AC classes have a higher flat fee).
How does Tatkal cancellation differ?
For any refund (minus Tatkal charges) cancellation must be made 24 hours before scheduled train departure. No refund if cancelled between 24 hours before train departure and chart preperation.
What about e-tickets vs counter tickets?
E-tickets can be cancelled online through IRCTC's official website or app. Counter tickets have to be cancelled at the station with different rules.
